MASSVENTIL® MASS VENTILATOR SYSTEM

In the framework of the MASSVENTIL® project, we are designing a ventilator system for permanent and temporary epidemiological hospitals and for disaster management, that can ventilate 20 or even more people simultaneously according to the individual needs of the patient. The MASSVENTIL® system relieves staff workload; its closed system hampers the spread of viruses, reduces the per-capita cost of mass patient care, and can be used in non-hospital environments.

This COVID-19 innovation project was born from the collaboration of the civil, industrial, academic, and public sectors, and its cross-sectoral and transnational community has made an alliance to save lives.

MEDICOR Zrt., together with the inventors and the former civil, business, and university sponsors of the project, is further developing the mass ventilation system into a commercial medical device.

To whom helps the MASSVENTIL® mass ventilator system?

Pandemics have been and are expected by experts to show up due to the intensification of international mobility, but in addition, the MASSVENTIL® system will be useful in all cases where no sufficient ventilation equipment is available on an ad-hoc basis, or there is not enough medical staff to care for a large number of patients (e.g., industrial accidents, acts of war).

The version built into the mobile container can be easily transported and used in a variety of emergencies, especially in developing countries or rural areas with less developed infrastructure.

Among others, the device will expand the toolbox of disaster management and provide solutions to problems for which there has been no well-functioning solution so far.

For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic:

  • Medical ventilators were typically able to serve single patients, and the available quantity was not sufficient to care for all pandemic patients. Countries competed with each other for ventilators, with many countries unable to afford mass purchases of the devices.
  • One single doctor can supervise up to 3-4 critically ill patients with acute respiratory problems that require intensive monitoring, so the number of doctors has limited the capacity of the care system.
  • Doctors and nurses were overwhelmed, not only by the risk of infection and fatigue but also by the responsibility of triage.
  • In several countries, health workers became ill or died from an infection they caught from patients at work.
  • Several ad-hoc camp hospitals were set up to complement the capacity of existing hospitals, but infrastructure also had to be built here. Due to the limited number of staff in such an environment, the continuous real-time patient monitoring and care was very difficult.

During the development of the MASSVENTIL® mass ventilator system, we continue to work out a solution to these problems.

What are the advantages of the MASSVENTIL® mass ventilator system?

It relieves staff workload

Individual patient parameters, aggregate patient statistics, and status indicators are collected by a central unit; so the doctor can remotely see the status and alarms of all patients on a monitor without having to walk to beds. It saves time while making real-time data based, reliable instant decisions on a large scale. Part of the work, the monitoring is effectively aided by technology, and that relieves the workload of doctors and increases the efficiency of the care system.

Its closed system hampers the spread of viruses

The MASSVENTIL® mass ventilator system filters the exhaled air through the closed exhalation duck system and carries the pathogens to the open air, i.e., the pathogens do not enter the common airspace of the hospital. This reduces the risk of cross-contamination by the patient, and so the system protects the medical staff.

Reduces the unit cost of mass patient care

It significantly reduces the unit cost of ventilation per patient by eliminating small engines dedicated to each patient. Instead, a high-reliability central gas distribution unit is operating the entire system. Thus, health care institutions can finance a higher number of emergency beds out of a given budget compared to if large numbers of individual ventilators were used.

It can also be used in a non-hospital camp environment

The system is easy to mobilize: the container model is tailored to the needs of camp hospitals, a transportable solution that can be deployed quickly. The goal is to allow the system to be effectively used ad-hoc in an out-of-hospital environment without the necessity of advanced hospital infrastructure.

Why will the new MASSVENTIL® mass ventilation system be reliable?

The experienced Hungarian medical device manufacturer MEDICOR Zrt., with a history of 100 years – together with the University of Óbuda and the original inventors-, is further developing the MASSVENTIL® mass ventilator system into a medical prototype, thus creating a licensed, commercial medical device.

MEDICOR Zrt. is a 100% Hungarian-owned company. Key facts:

MASSVENTIL® TECHNOLOGY

The MASSVENTIL® system is based on a completely new technology: it significantly reduces the cost of ventilation per patient by eliminating small engines dedicated to every patient and providing a few robust motors running the entire system instead. Safety is guaranteed by redundancy and backup systems, like in the case of an aircraft.
